Reflexology applies pressure to a range of particular points on your hands and feet that correspond with organs, tissues and muscles in your body. Reflexology is based on similar principles to acupuncture by putting pressure on one part of the foot the therapist sends an impulse or message all the way along it, which unblocks the Qi and encourages the energy to flow freely again. This encourages the body to return to a state of homeostasis and a sense of balance and well-being returns.
Reflexology is recommended by doctors for a variety of conditions, including:
- Back pain and muscle strain
- Anxiety and depression
- Sleep and eating disorders
- Poor circulation
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Pre-menstrual tension
Reflexology is a popular form of massage that is used frequently in western society. It is based on the concept that all the parts of the body are connected through energy pathways that terminate/originate in the feet.
The practitioner will work over these reflex areas in a repetitive systematic way to stimulate the body’s responses and promote a general feeling of wellbeing.
What is the Bowen Technique?
Tom Bowen from Victoria, Australia devised the original muscular skeletal treatment. Following his interest and studies in the human muscular structure, he intuitively began working with this gentle technique discovering that certain moves on the body helped recovery from many conditions. His work in his popular clinic in Geelong, was verified by the 1975 Victorian Government Inquiry into alternative health care professions. It is recorded that he saw some 13,000 patients every year – an incredible work-rate.
Bowen is a very gentle treatment that uses small rolling movements over specific muscles and tendons around the body. As such it is a treatment that is suitable for everyone from babies to the very elderly. Working with the fascial layer, Fascia is the sheet of connective tissue that covers the structures of the body – allowing flexibility and movement between various parts of the body. Necessary changes can be made that allow movement to operate in a more normal and pain free manner.
Bowen can be seen to be working on various levels in the body during and after treatment. Muscles relax and re adjust themselves, pain levels often reduce or disappear altogether, a sense of wellbeing and confidence in movement also often accompanies treatment.
During a treatment after a few moves, the client is left to rest for a couple of minutes whilst the body ‘accepts’ what has been done to it. These breaks continue throughout the remainder of the treatment. Moves can be performed through thin clothing such as fine cotton fabric. Before and afterwards the client will be encouraged to drink plenty of water as this helps the body to function better generally and particularly during treatments.
Usually 3 treatments are recommended as a minimum to give the body a sufficient chance to respond to the Bowen. Some conditions may benefit from regular treatment others may need no further follow up. Initial treatment will include taking a full consultation from the client.
Occasionally some clients get a type of ‘healing crisis’ or reaction to treatments. This does not alter the potential effectiveness of the treatment, but can make for an uncomfortable few days. This does not happen often and usually passes with a further improvement of symptoms afterwards.
Ongoing research is going on all the time into the effectiveness of the Bowen Technique on muscular skeletal problems and some recent ones can be found on the Bowen Technique website.
