Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy has been recorded in Ancient Greek (400BC) and Ancient Chinese medicine (1000BC) to effectively reduce the symptoms associated with cold, flu, bronchitis and respiratory illness.  It also has a good physiological effect that helps to reduce musculoskeletal pain.

Cupping Therapy

There are different forms of cupping therapy but the basic principle is that acupressure is applied on specific acupuncture points by placing a vacuum of pressure through a glass container.

Fire cupping is the most traditional method and arguably the most popular in modern day treatment programmes.  The glass cup is heated before the flame is extinguished and the cup is quickly placed on the acupuncture point selected by the practitioner.

The sensation experienced by the patient is usually warming and relaxing.  Other variations include; flash cupping, needle cupping and suction cupping.

Before patients undergo this treatment it is important to acknowledge that the marks left by the glass cups can, at times, last for up to a week.
